Professor Zhao has made significant contributions to the development of clean energy and described his election to the Academy as “humbling.” “It provides a great opportunity to promote the need for a strong science base to underpin the management of Australia’s freshwater ecosystems.” Professor Bunn said he was both delighted and honoured to have his research recognised by the Academy. “Freshwater systems are under increasing pressure from human activities and, like many of my colleagues, I am passionate about making a difference.”
“I started my career studying small forest streams in Western Australia and have since had the opportunity to visit and study river and wetland systems around the world. “I have always been interested in natural history, but I knew in my first year as a zoology undergraduate student that this was the career I wanted to pursue,” Professor Bunn said. Professor Bunn is internationally recognised for his research on the structure and function of freshwater ecosystems and in 2019 was named as an Earth Commissioner by international research organisation Future Earth.
